Multi-channel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW)

Municon has completed 200+ Vs30 seismic surveys using Multi-channel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) and downhole seismic techniques.

Seismic Site Classification (VS-30 test)

Seismic site classification is a crucial step in understanding the ground conditions at a particular location, which is vital for earthquake engineering. The 1-Dimensional (1D) Seismic Profile, derived from the MASW investigation, can be utilized to calculate a time-averaged shear wave velocity of the upper 30 meters (VS-30), which is directly informing the site class, based on the applicable building code.

MASW is a versatile tool with applications in:

Geotechnical Engineering: Assessing dynamic soil properties to support in earthquake engineering, geotechnical designs, ,foundations, and land use planning.

Environmental Studies: Mapping of geological strata and more.

Civil Engineering: Designing safer infrastructure, such as bridges, tunnels, and roads.

Why Choose MASW?

Cost-Effective: A cost-efficient alternative to traditional subsurface exploration methods, such as drilling.

Fast Results: Get valuable data in a shorter time frame.

Non-Invasive: No drilling or excavation required, reducing environmental impact.

High Resolution: Provides detailed subsurface information for accurate decision-making.

Municon has a California business license and a headquarters in San Francisco, CA.

Starting with the 2025 California Building Code (CBC) / ASCE 7-22 code cycle, seismic site classification is more sensitive to actual shear-wave velocity. MASW/Vs30 testing gives the geotechnical and structural team a defensible measured basis for site class, can avoid overly conservative defaults, and can reduce uncertainty for design, permitting, and construction.
